Today we were going to try and beat our previous record of eight county tops in one day – by aiming for the low unitary authority tops spread across the former counties of Merseyside and Greater Manchester. We were hoping to get into double figures today, although we’d dealt our record chances a slight blow by bagging one of our easiest and fastest record attempt tops (Wirral) at the end of yesterday instead. Still, our first top today was even easier. We parked on Reservoir Road, a residential road pretty much bang on the highest point of Liverpool – a step up onto the kerb was all that was needed. The highest point was actually on the adjacent raised reservoir from which the road takes its name, but as a manmade structure it didn’t count. Given Liverpool’s reputation, we felt that this top might have been in a bit of a scummy area. It was quite the reverse – Woolton Hill looked quite a nice place to live. Our biggest surprise though was the large and ornate brick tower perched on top of the reservoir. A most impressive structure, we guessed it was used as a small water tower – for the houses immediately around the reservoir, the water pressure would not be high enough without this additional height. One top down, nine to go…
