The Walk:

What with my wife’s pregnancy and the birth of my daughter, it had been a long time since I’d wanted to go on a proper bagging trip. After a year, though, I’d started to get itchy feet (yes, I had washed them...) and the end result was Jim and I heading off up to the southern Pennines and Peak District for three days of county top bagging. On the way we would pick up all the low county tops up the northern half of the M1. Jus and Cat were due to join us later, probably around our sixth top of the day.

We arrived at our first county top (Unitary Authority of Derby) shortly after 7am. There was just one other chap around, walking his dog, and Jim and I waited until he was out of sight to avoid the usual embarrassment of getting out my GPS and Jim’s SLR camera in a location that frankly didn’t warrant them. It was bitterly cold and I was glad I hadn’t worn shorts.

It was certainly a pleasant enough area for the dog walker, characterised by idiotic pheasants running aimlessly along meandering paths through bluebell-lined woods. We too wandered aimlessly for a while, for it was not at all obvious where the highest point was. Beyond the picnic site the ground started to angle downhill slightly as we approached the water tower, and we decided that the highest point was probably a slight bump near the picnic area. To be quite honest, though, it could have been anywhere.

Verdict:
A nice spot to walk your dog or for a cool picnic on a hot summer’s day. However, not one for hill-walkers other than committed county top baggers!
